Here’s how your Misty Fjords floatplane tour will look and feel. Imagine yourself in a flawlessly maintained DeHavilland Beaver or Otter. A highly trained, experienced bush pilot is at the controls. You are on top of the world, with the Misty Fjords National Monument sparkling below. This ice-rimmed wilderness was slowly carved out by massive glaciers tens of thousands of years ago. You’ll see cascading waterfalls, jewel-like lakes, and abundant wildlife. Lock your eyes on sheer walls of granite plunging over 3,000 feet into the fjords, lush forests of spruce, hemlock and cedar clinging to snowcapped peaks.
All in all, flightseeing over this pristine wilderness may be the highlight of your trip.
Please Note: The weather is always part of your flight plan. You may see New Eddystone Rock and Big Goat Lake to the South or Neets Bay and Bell Island Hot Springs to the North, depending on how the weather alters your route. We are the first air carrier in Alaska to have a Safety Management System by the FAA; as you might expect, watching out for your safety is a high priority for us. We are recognized for our distinguished safety and maintenance record, something we would like to keep and continue to innovate in Southeast Alaska.
Passenger names and weights are required by the FAA for weight and balance calculations and flight manifesting. To ensure aircraft weight and balance is within operating parameters, guests weighing 250 lbs. (clothed weight) or more may be required to pay an additional surcharge of $168 over the published fare direct to the tour operator. A no-bag policy applies; however, if you have medical needs that require a carry-on bag, please see the Shore Excursion office on board. All other bags brought to our terminal will be stored until you return from your flight.

Description
The Traitors Cove Bear Viewing experience begins with a short 20 minute floatplane flight over the lush wilderness of the Tongass National Forest. Your pilot will narrate along the way, pointing out key points in the area. After you touch down in Traitors Cove, you will be met on the floatplane dock by your personal Alaska Bear Guide who will drive you about one mile down a United States Forest Service (USFS) road to a trailhead. Your guide will safely escort you down the trail (approximately 250 yards) to the Margaret Creek Bear Viewing platform. Along the trail, your guide will point out the flora, fauna, berries and trees as well as any wildlife you encounter. Keep your eyes peeled all around – bald eagles and even bears are known to perch high above in the trees.

You’re in for the journey of a lifetime. We’ve combined the best experiences of Alaska for this unique 3-hour excursion. Glacier flightseeing, the remote and historic private Taku Glacier Lodge, wilderness trails, wildlife, and to top it off a scrumptious wild Alaska salmon feast.
A true Alaskan experience, your adventure begins the moment you “take off” from the heart of the Juneau waterfront. Each passenger will take pleasure in an unrestricted view of the magnificent glaciers and deep blue crevasses of the Juneau Icefield. Snow-capped mountains, cascading waterfalls and lush forests await. A full narration allows continuous information while allowing the pilot to focus on their all important piloting duties.
The Taku River will be your “runway” when landing at the Taku Glacier Lodge. This historic lodge was built in 1923 directly across from the picturesque Hole-In-The-Wall Glacier, and sits amid the untouched Tongass National Forest. Shortly after your arrival, the aroma of fresh Wild Alaska Salmon tells you the feast is about to begin. Your salmon entrée will be complimented with all homemade side dishes for either brunch, lunch or dinner, including actual glacier ice to cool your drinks. This truly Alaskan meal is presented with an elegantly rustic charm. While enjoying your meal, your host will entertain you with stories of Taku Lodges colorful past and characters like Mary Joyce with her famous 1000 mile dog sled trip that put the Taku Glacier Lodge on the Alaska map. This unique lodge is decorated with old dog sleds, hunting and trapping gear, furs and other Alaskan memorabilia.
This is your Taku Glacier Lodge trip; MAKE IT WHAT YOU WANT! After your meal you may take in one of a number of options; wander the well-maintained trails of the old growth forest independently, explore on a guided interpretative nature walk, or relax with a beverage and soak in the serenity of a place scarcely touched by time. All the while keep an eye out for the black bears that can’t resist the aroma of fresh grilled Alaskan Salmon.

Note: All participants enjoy a window seat for enhanced viewing and a headset for continuous narration. The Taku Glacier Lodge is on the National Register of Historic Places. One of the most important modes of transportation in Alaska is the seaplane (also known as a floatplane), allowing you to escape into the true Alaskan wilderness within minutes of leaving downtown Juneau.

Sheldon Air Service offers bear viewing trips from Talkeetna to Chinitna Bay. Chinitna Bay is part of Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, and located on the west side of the Cook Inlet. The area is accessed in a wheel equipped aircraft . Our Pilots Udo and Tom both have years of experience taking groups bearviewing in Alaska, and Chinitna Bay especially. Your pilot and guide will take you on an appropriate 1-1/2 hour flight from Talkeetna down the coast to Chinitina Bay. It is not uncommon to spot moose, bear, seals and Beluga whales while we are on our way. The flight will take you past three active volcanos, Mount Spurr, Mount Redoubt, and Mount Illiamna. We land on a remote beach where the pilot, after securing the airplane above the high tide line, will be your bear guide and take you along the beach to view the bears. We will spot bears in the meadows, along the beach, or during low tide on the flats digging for clams.
What to expect:
About a week before your trip we will contact you with the exact time we would like for you to arrive at our office, and estimated departure time of your aircraft. Chinitna Bay is along the coast and the tide and weather play a large role in our decision making for your safety.
Upon arrival at our office/hangar we will check you in and size you for boots/waders. You will meet up with your pilot whom also will be your experienced bear guide while you are at the bay. After an overview for the day the pilot will take you to the aircraft, where after a safety briefing, you will board and be on your way.
At Chinitna Bay we will land on the beach. Under the guidance of your bear guides you will walk the beach and meadows to observe the bears in their natural habitat. During May and June the bears will feed on the grass in the meadows and digging for clams during low tide. The salmon starts showing up around the middle of July and runs through till late September. You will spend approximately 3-hours on the beach. On your flight back your pilot will fly the coast line to look for Beluga’s and seals.
What to wear:
Alaska coastal weather is very variable. You should have sufficient warm clothing, rain jacket, and suitable hiking boats to be outdoors for a length of time. We will provide you with rain boots or waders when required.
