Description
As our aircraft lifts off from Whakatane, we waste no time heading straight for the ocean, where the alluring Whale Island, or Moutuhora, awaits. This extinct volcano, now transformed into a wildlife refuge, holds stories of its varied past – from sulfur mining and farming to its days as a base for a whaling station. Despite its dormant state, the island gives subtle hints of the volcanic activity that lies beneath, with its stunning hot water beach and the captivating Sulphur Valley and Sulphur Bay.

Our daily departures begin by flying across farmland and white sand beaches to Moutohora, Whale Island. An extinct volcano that is now a wildlife refuge, we often spot dolphins and large schools of fish from our great vantage point in the sky.
Once over White Island, you’ll be awed by the alien landscape and power of this rumbling giant. You’ll smell volcanic gasses as we fly over the mud and ash-soaked crater. Description
